Introduction
In 2022, partly inspired by the restrictions of the Covid lockdowns, we made a bold decision—to spend three months living in a remote mountain village in Liguria, Italy. Nestled in the Italian Alps, this tiny village was home to just 10 families and an incredible six miniature churches, a testament to the deep-rooted history of the area. The echoes of time were unmistakable, with many derelict homes standing as reminders of migration to industrial hubs like Milan and Turin.
Rediscovering Nature
The decades-long exodus had left vast stretches of mountain terrain to slowly return to nature, showing the healing power of nature when left to its own devices. The evidence of previous occupation is everywhere in abandoned homes, machinery and farming terraces. Living there, we felt a harmonious blend of stillness and connection with the land. The local Mayoress even began posting community notices in both Italian and English—a gesture that made us feel incredibly welcome. Through a mix of pidgin Italian, Google Translate, and a willingness to connect, we bridged the language gap and became part of this warm, tight-knit community.
The Charm of Village Life
Our home for three months was a picturesque, two-bedroom house located in the village’s heart. Its terrace opened up to the most breathtaking views of the valley, and by night, the absence of light pollution revealed a mesmerizing, star-filled Milky Way. Such sights are an almost forgotten luxury in modern urban life.
This village’s location was an added bonus—it offered both serenity and accessibility. We were just a short trip away from the Italian Riviera, Monaco, and Nice, with Venice, Florence, and Tuscany also within reach.
The Flavors of Liguria
Liguria is synonymous with its culinary delights, and our time there was a feast for the senses. As the birthplace of pesto, the region boasts ingredients so fresh and flavorful they elevate even the simplest dishes. Basil, truffles, olive oil, and Parmesan cheese form the essence of Ligurian cuisine, and the variations we discovered were endless.
A Unique Northern Italian Experience
Life in Liguria is a celebration of contrasts. The lush vineyards, rolling hills, and stunning architecture create an idyllic backdrop for daily life. Equally captivating is the rustic charm of the pre-Alpine villages, where simplicity reigns and wildlife thrives—including wild boar, wolves, and even lynx.
