Preserving Ireland’s Endangered Heritage: A Journey Through Traditional Shops

Introduction

This mini-project started a couple of years ago when I walked into a shop that I used to visit as a child in the early 1970s. To my amazement, it had not changed one bit in the intervening 50 odd years, including the lady who worked in the shop. I grabbed my camera and took a few images, and that moment sparked a desire to preserve the memory, history and charm of these old traditional shops.

A Nostalgic Exploration

My journey began with that initial visit, but it quickly evolved into a broader search for similar shops across Ireland. These little gems, often overlooked in our fast-paced modern world, hold a wealth of stories and memories. My collection is growing—albeit very slowly—as I seek out these disappearing gems.

Unique Finds Across Ireland

The quest has taken me to some fascinating places. From a combined pub and shop in Athy to a little hardware store in Macroom where a tame robin flutters about, each visit is a step back in time. There’s also the charming general store in Roscommon that still sells carbolic soap, a rare find in today’s age of supermarket chains.

The Human Connection

What truly makes these shops special are the people who run them. Their dedication, their stories, and the sense of community they foster are irreplaceable. It’s their warmth and continuity that make me want to document and share these treasures before they fade away forever.

A Call to Action

As these traditional shops vanish from our landscapes, I urge anyone who knows of similar establishments still in operation to reach out. Your tips can help me preserve these slices of history for future generations to appreciate. Let’s work together to celebrate and protect the unique charm of Ireland’s traditional shops.
